Senators urge Amtrak to keep terminal staff

CINCINNATI – Ohio’s US Senators battle to keep Amtrak employees at a terminal in southwest Ohio.

Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown and Republican Senator Rob Portman recently wrote a letter urging Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson to change the company’s decision to close the ticket window at Union Terminal in Cincinnati. There are two full-time positions for clerks serving the site.

Amtrak plans to replace the employees with a “caretaker” who will open and close the facility.

In the course of the renovation work, fewer passengers have used the station. The upgrades are expected to be completed later this year.

Brown and Portman argue that the terminal will need both employees once the renovations are complete and passenger numbers rise.

Local officials have also campaigned to save the ticket window.
