After learning the University of Cincinnati is now requiring its classmates to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Sterling Gauche had mixed feelings.

“I have a feeling that it is good to stop the spread,” said Gauche. “But obviously I have a feeling that people are going to have some kind of malevolence about it, because obviously it’s like, ‘Hey, if you don’t get this vaccine we’re going to kick you out of school.’ So this can definitely go wrong with people who don’t trust him. “

But UC student Tom Hannigan said that because Pfizer’s vaccine was fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration, now is the time for university officials, students, staff and faculty members to roll up their sleeves.

“We have to get all of these other vaccines to even get on campus,” Hannigan said. “I’ve been vaccinated since March. So, you know, I’m totally fine with this. … I understand that when it has been used in an emergency, people hesitate. But again, back to all of those other vaccine requirements that … we must have for school, they have all been fully approved. “

Dr. Steve Cleves of Tri-Health told WLWT investigator Todd Dykes that vaccinating college students is especially important as the delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading everywhere.

“College students, Todd, are a very unique dynamic,” Cleves said. “They are together a lot. They are in dormitories. They are in apartments. They share a common room.

“Is that why vaccinations play a key role?” asked Dykes.

“Absolutely,” said Cleves. “Once you see a healthy young person who is really upset about an illness, you realize that the whole thing could be preventable.”

As part of UC’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement, a final dose must be given by November 15th. Members of the campus community who refuse the vaccination or who do not receive an approved waiver will be withdrawn from classes next spring.
